‘Batman vs. Batman’ by Fikret Atay

ISTANBUL – Hürriyet Daily News
Thursday, November 12, 2009

Fikret Atay, a well-known Turkish artist living in Paris, brings together the recent works of ’Batman vs. Batman,’ which depicts the comical homonymy between the southeastern Turkish city of Batman and the superhero figure, and ’Gooaall!!’ in which he deals with asphalt roads, which are prime symbols of modernism
Outlet//Independent Art Space presents the first Istanbul solo show of internationally renowned Turkish artist Fikret Atay. The artist is premiering two video works for the Istanbul audience.

The exhibition brings together the recent works “Batman vs. Batman” and “Gooaall!!” which were both produced this year. Added to these is a selection of past highlights, including “Spring Fever” and “Holiwuut.”

Fikret Atay has had solo exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Bonner Kunstverein in Germany, Site Gallery in the United Kingdom, Hammer Museum in the United States, Maison de l’Architecture in France, Index in Sweden and Büro Friedrich in Germany.

Atay, who is showing his video work “Theorists” at the ongoing 10th Lyon Biennial, will also participate at the Alexandria Biennial this December, where “Gooaall!!” will be introduced to a large international audience.

In his videos, Atay makes reference to “country issues” through cultural, social and geographical connections. His work is involved with traditional lifestyles, which are marked by Western influences. As a Turkish artist who has gained worldwide acclaim at a young age, his success is rooted in his ability to discover the universal aspects of supposedly local concerns.

In his “Batman vs. Batman” video, Atay depicts the comical homonymy between the southeastern Turkish city of Batman and the superhero figure, documenting a lawsuit pursued by distraught local authorities. Whereas the case was largely ignored or derided internationally, Atay turns the officials’ quest into a superhero story of its own. The mayor of Batman morphs into a real-world surrogate of the “Dark Knight.” Atay’s documentary-style inquiry is meshed with snippets of the Batman series, thus involving the audience in a spirited and playful displacement.

In the video “Gooaall!!” the artist deals with paved roads, which serve as a primary symbol of modernity. He depicts children experiencing modernity, consciously or not, as they play football barefoot on the asphalt road where past meets future and center meets periphery. The old man scores in the seemingly empty net – which is perhaps kept by the viewer. He scores against the center.

The exhibition “Batman vs. Batman” can be seen from Tuesday to Saturday through Nov. 26.

Adrian Paci Konuşması

4 Nisan Cumartesi, 14.00
Garanti Galeri ve Platform Garanti Güncel Sanat Merkezi / 5. Kat
Garanti Han 115A, İstiklal Caddesi

Adrian Paci, kişisel deneyimlerini yeniden yaratırken, belgesel nitelikli düz bir sunumdan ziyade geleneksel hikaye anlatım yöntemlerini kullanıyor. Kendi düğününde çekilen video görüntülerini tabloya dönüştürebiliyor (Düğün / The Wedding, 2003), ailesinin Arnavutluk’tan İtalya’ya göç hikayesini kızının anlatımıyla masalsı bir ifadeyle kayda geçirebiliyor (Arnavut Masalları / Albanian Stories, 1997).

Adrian Paci, WHW’nin düzenlediği Yamuk Bakmak / Looking Awry (apexart, 2003); Balkanların Geçitlerinde / In the Gorges of the Balkans (Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany, 2003); New Video, New Europe, (Tate Modern, London, 2004); Biennial of Sevilla, (2004) gibi birçok sergiye katıldı. Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; PS1/Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum Am Ostwall, Dortmund’da kişisel sergiler açtı.

doublethink-2

Doublethink-2
Video and Sound Installation, 4min.

Exibition Format: sound installation along a tight, curvy and dark hall, video installation in a dark and small cabin at the end of the hall.
The second piece of the Doublethink project is formed by 10 youtube videos in which the pre-school kids are singing the national anthem memorized by heart. These videos are only a sample of what was uploaded by the proud parents and teachers.
While groping in the dark hall, the audiance will hear the sound of the kids singing the anthem in a pretentious, almost hysterical and overexaggerated way. When at last the room at the end of the hall is reached, the overacted gestures of the kids, their difficulties in memorizing, their artificial tears can be observed in the video, this time in total silence.

doublethink-1

“Doublethink 1”

Video Instalation 4 min. 43 sec.

All the nations that were founded late 19th century or early 20th century are based on their national symbols, heroic stories, made-up mythologies and independence war heroes to create and strengthen the consciousnes of being a state and to connect the citizens horizontally with the bounds of the brotherhood. In the case of Turkish Republic, one of the most important national symbols is the national anthem, “Istiklal Marsi”

It is formed of 41 lines and 256 words and any Turkish citizen is obliged to know it word by word beginning from early childhood. Is it possible to think of this hymn (which all the students in all the schools sing every monday morning and ever friday evening until reaching the university years) in a different way?
The doublethink project consists of two video installations. To form the first one, all the words of the anthem were put in alfabetical order. This coincidential method of creating a new, almost dadaist poem, sometimes ended up creating new meanings, and sometimes totaly absurd ones. Afterwards, the video has been created by the first 256 images which google images finds searching for the turkish anthem “istiklal marsi” . Each image lasts on the screen during the reading of the words that forms the new poem. The overrepetition of the words such as patria, blood, nation, citizen, martyrs, as well as the repetition of the images of national ceremonies, flag, the school kids etc. can be observed in the video. The aim of this randomly made video is to invite the audiance to think about the fragile theme of being a nation, to forget about its sacred meanings and to trivialize it.

The name of the piece is inspired from the famous novel of George Orwell, 1984:

And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed–if all records told the same tale–then the lie passed into history and became truth. ‘Who controls the past,’ ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.’ And yet the past, though of its nature alterable, never had been altered. Whatever was true now was true from everlasting to everlasting. It was quite simple. All that was needed was an unending series of victories over your own memory. ‘Reality control’, they called it: in Newspeak, ‘doublethink’.

Deniz Gül

Tokyo Wonder Site Residency in Collaboration with Platform Garanti
Fall 2008

Deniz Gül lives and works in Istanbul, Turkey where she received her BA in Visual Arts and Communication Design from Sabanci University.

Gül’s artistic practice involves public interventions or site-specific productions ans she uses photography, video, objects and text to create works of art that examine the construction of identity and space through social roles, urban myths and representation. Dealing with a matter’s condition of existence, she deconstructs her subjects to capture and develop a new reality. In her recent video series Mama Stop! (2008, Tokyo) she depicts forms of parental control over a child in different settings and reproduces codes of behaviour via spatial arguments on identities and roles of women in society. Gül’s latest photographic series Backyard and Façade (2008, Istanbul) exposes the use of an early 19th century style of architectural structure composed of counterfeit combination of baroque and western styles by a narrative which imagines fictive characters circulating in the contemporary cultural, social and practical rituals. This series reproduces the cult of western influence on the orient and locates cultural artefacts in a staged wedding celebration.

In addition to her artistic practice, Gül writes for various magazines and blogs about contemporary culture, arts, design and urban life. In 2008, Gul’s fictive-documentary Zeytinburnu Monologues was published as a part of “Urban Makers- Parallel Narratives of Grassroots Practices and Tensions” by Bbooks, Germany. In the same year, she exhibited in “Post-it Cities”, Centre De Cultura Contemporania (Barcelona) and “Bodig 08”, Hafriyat (Istanbul).

Collaborations 2008

Spike Island Residency in Collaboration with Platform Garanti

Fall 2008

Fatma Ciftci was born in Amasya in 1981 and now lives and works in Istanbul. She graduated from the Bilkent University Fine Arts Department of Ankara in 2005.

Cifti works with photography, video, performance, animation and drawing, merging these different media within her artistic practice. She often introduces found images and objects to her works in order to invent games that blur reality and fiction, as well as modes of representation and creativity. In her recent works Cifti’s interest has focused on political and military issues. For example I will be a soldier is a series of eight embroidered drawings that each depict the black silhouette of a soldier in a different military position. The inspiration for this series is a toy soldier and the childish expression ‘when I grow up I want to be a solder’. The relationship between the influence of such a toy and a child’s imagined dream can be seen as both ironic and paradoxical.

Once Upon a Time in Istanbul is a video project in which Cifti overlays a found amateur 16mm film with dialogue from old Turkish movies. The video was shot in the 1970s in Istanbul and it presents scenes of people and their social activities of that period. Cifti’s layering of periods and subjects creates a complex sequence that sees change condensed into one act.

In 2008 Cifti attended the Spike Island Residency programme in Bristol for three months. Her work was presented on the YAMA public screen in Istanbul in 2008 and in Asia Art Now, Arario Beijing, China, 2007; Mom’s Livingroom, Goyang Art Studio Exhibition Hall, Seoul, Korea, 2007; freekick (hospitality zone of 9th International Istanbul Biennial, Turkey, 2005; and in the 23rd Exhibition of Contemporary Artists of Istanbul and of Diyarbakir, Turkey, 2004.
