‘Batman vs. Batman’ by Fikret Atay
ISTANBUL – Hürriyet Daily News
Thursday, November 12, 2009
Fikret Atay, a well-known Turkish artist living in Paris, brings together the recent works of ’Batman vs. Batman,’ which depicts the comical homonymy between the southeastern Turkish city of Batman and the superhero figure, and ’Gooaall!!’ in which he deals with asphalt roads, which are prime symbols of modernism
Outlet//Independent Art Space presents the first Istanbul solo show of internationally renowned Turkish artist Fikret Atay. The artist is premiering two video works for the Istanbul audience.
The exhibition brings together the recent works “Batman vs. Batman” and “Gooaall!!” which were both produced this year. Added to these is a selection of past highlights, including “Spring Fever” and “Holiwuut.”
Fikret Atay has had solo exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Bonner Kunstverein in Germany, Site Gallery in the United Kingdom, Hammer Museum in the United States, Maison de l’Architecture in France, Index in Sweden and Büro Friedrich in Germany.
Atay, who is showing his video work “Theorists” at the ongoing 10th Lyon Biennial, will also participate at the Alexandria Biennial this December, where “Gooaall!!” will be introduced to a large international audience.
In his videos, Atay makes reference to “country issues” through cultural, social and geographical connections. His work is involved with traditional lifestyles, which are marked by Western influences. As a Turkish artist who has gained worldwide acclaim at a young age, his success is rooted in his ability to discover the universal aspects of supposedly local concerns.
In his “Batman vs. Batman” video, Atay depicts the comical homonymy between the southeastern Turkish city of Batman and the superhero figure, documenting a lawsuit pursued by distraught local authorities. Whereas the case was largely ignored or derided internationally, Atay turns the officials’ quest into a superhero story of its own. The mayor of Batman morphs into a real-world surrogate of the “Dark Knight.” Atay’s documentary-style inquiry is meshed with snippets of the Batman series, thus involving the audience in a spirited and playful displacement.
In the video “Gooaall!!” the artist deals with paved roads, which serve as a primary symbol of modernity. He depicts children experiencing modernity, consciously or not, as they play football barefoot on the asphalt road where past meets future and center meets periphery. The old man scores in the seemingly empty net – which is perhaps kept by the viewer. He scores against the center.
The exhibition “Batman vs. Batman” can be seen from Tuesday to Saturday through Nov. 26.

Or, how does language affect the imagination?”

“Batman Batman’a Karşı”@ OUTLET

“Batman Batman’a Karşı” videosunda Atay, Batman çizgi karakteri ve Batman şehri arasındaki komik ses benzerliğinin farkına varılarak dava açılmasıyla ilgileniyor.
Fikret Atay “Batman Batman’a karşı” sergisi 22 Ekim’den 26 Kasım’a dek Salı’dan Cumartesi’ye 10.00-18.30 saatleri arasında Outlet//İhraç Fazlası Sanat ‘ta görülebilir.

“Batman vs. Batman”
Outlet//Independent Art Space presents the first solo show in Turkey of the internationally known artist Fikret Atay! The artist will premiere two video works for the Istanbul audience.
Fikret Atay has had solo exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Bonner Kunstverein (Germany), Site Gallery (UK), Hammer Museum (USA), Maison de l’Architecture (France), Index (Sweden), Büro Friedrich (Germany). The exhibition brings together the recent works “Batman vs. Batman” and “Gooaall!!”, both produced in 2009. Added to these are a selection of already classic works including “Fuck Tic”, “Spring Fever” and “Holiwuut”. Atay, who presents his video work entitled “Theorists” at the ongoing 10th Lyon Biennial, will also participate at the Alexandria Biennial this December, where one of his recent works “Goaall” will reach the international audience for the first time.
In his videos, FIKRET ATAY makes reference to “country matters” through cultural, social and geographical connections. His work is involved with traditional lifestyles which are marked by Western influences. As a Turkish artist who has gained worldwide acclaim at an early age, his success is rooted in his ability to discover the universal aspects of supposedly local concerns and his ability to reflect on these.
In his “Batman vs. Batman” video, Atay depicts the comical homonymy between the city of Batman and the superhero figure as a contention that is taken seriously by local authorities and which leads to a lawsuit. Whereas internationally the case wasn’t taken seriously or derided, Atay turns the event into a superhero story, similar to the genre of the Batman movies. The mayor of Batman mutates virtually into “The Dark Knight”. Atay’s documentary style inquiry is meshed with snippets of the Batman series, thus involving the audience in a spirited and playful displacement.
In the video “Goaall” the artist deals with the asphalt roads which are prime symbols of modernism. He depicts children experiencing modernism, consciously or not, as they play football barefoot on the asphalt road where past meets future and centre meets periphery. The old man scores in the empty net. Actually the net is kept by the viewers. He scores against the centre.
Born in Batman in 1976, Atay lives and works in Paris and Batman since 2003. The artist, who focuses on symbols, codes of symbols as well as the relationship between the concepts of identity and geography as well history, got interested recently by the representation of time and space within the framework of personal responsibility. Fikret Atay’s work is held in major public collections including FRAC, MUSAC, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montreal and the Museé du Luxembourg.
The exhibition “Batman vs. Batman” can be seen from October, 22 to November, 26 between Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10.00 to 18.30.
ABOUT OUTLET
Outlet is a venture to bring art, regarded as a luxury commodity, to the masses, in a time and space where social and cultural inequity is ever more deeply entrenched. Outlet hopes to provide an innovative and vigorous platform for an artistic context wedged between the city’s many bank galleries, private institutions and museums. Outlet is run by Azra Tüzünoğlu with support of Canan Pak, AYK, Mas Printing, BenQ, Point Hotel, Beck’s, Coca Cola, Net Copy Center and Derin Design.
Outlet Project Room will host distinctive works by artists from Turkey and abroad, as well as helping to support the production of new projects with the desire to intertwine a commercial and a non-profit project space to encourage new attitudes and conversations.

SERGİ / EXHIBITION
Mtaär artist initiative, welcomes everyone to their platform in Kadiköy, to the exhibition “Escape from Civilization” on 18th of September. Sevil Tunaboylu and Erkin Gören’s shared project, focuses on civilization that has been ‘reached’ after thousands of years through eastern / western cultures and life styles.
“Let the new human spirit that accustomed to live with a sense of defeat with the talent of forces upon, handle the materiality with the abstract value of money while bearing the spirit with the tangible things.
Several times each day trying to be grateful for what he has,but wishes to escape from the life that he has been stuck. Eventually, whatever he wishes, he can only escape, as long as the circumstances allow. And sure each time, he is in a position of escaping with the fear of going back or with the fear of wishing for going back. Such is the best slavery.”
‘Escape from Civilization’, is a a modest rebellion which brings the eastern and western civilizations geographically and culturally together, out of the big Istanbul.

Danilo Correale, on the other hand, has concentrated his research on the production of handcrafted cymbals in Istanbul which was manufactured by Armenian community since the Ottoman Empire.
