Structures from Turkey, Ireland, India, Yugoslavia, Great Britain, and the United States, among other countries, form a unified urban scale model, reconstructing these sites in the moments before they were destroyed. The installation, originally commissioned for the Turkish Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale, is accompanied by a text situating the included locations within a Calvinoesque narrative that engages the poetics and politics of space, architecture, violence, and international relations. Paraphrasing Calvino’s Invisible Cities, Öğüt presents visible but “semi-anonymous” buildings, whose intact form may be forgotten while the aftermaths of their destruction are seared into the collective consciousness via the media and individual consciousnesses via personal experience. The collapsing of time and distance in this collection of models is echoed by the vehicles—also used in terrorism, but referencing as well Öğüt’s ongoing interest in distance, time, and speed, measures by which our relationship to reality is shaped and through which disparate lands are connected.

From this central installation, the exhibition expands to other works. The film Things We Count pans slowly across the retired fighter planes at an airplane graveyard in Arizona’s Sonoran desert, as a voice counts them one by one in Kurdish, Turkish, and English. This counting, in the languages of faraway lands, connects the planes in their U.S. resting place to their actions in the larger world.

Öğüt recently had solo exhibitions at Künstlerhaus Bremen; Centre d’Art Santa Mònica, Barcelona; and Kunsthalle Basel. His work was also recently included in group exhibitions at Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw; De Appel, Amsterdam; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Malmö Konsthall, Sweden; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Netherlands; and the Berlin Biennale. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States. Born in Turkey in 1981, Öğüt lives and works in Amsterdam.

Elizabeth Thomas
Phyllis Wattis MATRIX Curator

The MATRIX Program at the UC Berkeley Art Museum is supported by a generous endowment gift from Phyllis C. Wattis; The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; and the continued support of the BAM/PFA Trustees. The presentation of Ahmet Öğüt: Exploded City / MATRIX 231 was made possible in part by the Mondriaan Foundation, Amsterdam.

http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/exhibition/231

Artists Space, New York
8 Temmuz - 1 Ağustos, 2009

Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin
Can Altay - Jeremiah Day
Burt Barr
Daniel Bozhkov,
Celine Condorelli
Cevdet Erek
Corey McCorkle
Christodoulos Panayiotou
Wael Shawky

Platform Garanti Güncel Sanat Merkezi ile New York’taki Artists Space’in işbirliğiyle düzenlenen, Vasıf Kortun ve November Paynter’in küratörlüğünü yaptığı bir dizi serbest proje ve sergiden oluşan Sütunlar Bize Güç Verdi, 8 Temmuz - 1 Ağustos tarihleri arasında New York’ta gerçekleştirilecek. Etkinlik, Platform’un daha önce birlikte çalıştığı uluslararası sanatçılar, İstanbul Misafirleri Programı katılımcıları ve New York’tan sanatçılarla hayata geçirilecek.

Proje ve sergiye; Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin, Can Altay, Burt Barr, Daniel Bozhkov, Celine Condorelli, Jeremiah Day, Cevdet Erek, Corey McCorkle, Christodoulos Panayiotou ve Wael Shawky katılacak.

“Sütunlar Bize Güç Verdi”, Amsterdam’daki The Dedalus Foundation, Mondriaan Foundation ve Moon and Stars tarafından destekleniyor.

Kat

Geçtiğimiz sene Project Arts Center'da (Dublin, İrlanda) düzenlenen bir grup sergisinden yola çıkarak oluşmaya başlayan bu kitap, farklı dönemlerden gelen ve farklı malzemeleri kullanan; fakat aynı konuyu ve duyarlılığı paylaşan iki sanatçının çalışmalarını belgeliyor. Simone Forti'nin gazetelerdeki günlük haberleri kullandığı doğaçlama performanslarına ve Jeremiah Day'in fotoğraf/alan araştırmalarına odaklanan kitap, hem bir katalog hem de bir sanatçı kitabı niteliğinde. Sanatçı Can Altay ile işbirliğiyle hazırlanan bu kitap, Day'in İstanbul'da üzerinde çalıştığı ana proje niteliğinde.

****

Jeremiah Day
Jeremiah Day / Simone Forti
Saturday, March 28 at 5:30 p.m.

Garanti Galeri - Platform Garanti
Istiklal Str. no:115A, Beyoglu/Ist.; 5th Floor

Developed from last year's collaborative exhibition at Project Arts Centre (Dublin, Ireland), this book documents the practice of two artists of different generations and mediums, but with shared subject matter and sensibility. Focussed on Simone Forti's improvisational performances working with stories from the daily news, and Jeremiah Day's photo/site investigations, the book is part catalogue, part artist's book. In addition to working collaboratively with Can Altay, this book has been Day's major project while here in Istanbul.

After graduating from UCLA and working in Los Angeles both in and out of the art context, in 2003 Jeremiah Day moved to Europe to attend Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten. Day's slide-shows, publications and installations combine photography, performance and research, and are critically informed by his experience working with an artist of an earlier generation, Simone Forti, whose practice has spanned from the origins of post-modern dance at Judson Church in the early 1960's, to the evolution of her moving-speaking improvisations, and increasingly as a writer.

Jeremiah Day, current resident at Platform Garanti supported by FONDS BKVB (The Netherlands) since November 2008.
