Açılış : 25 Aralık 2009 Cuma / 19:00 / Mtaär

Doog (Performans)

İnce motoru açılmış her şahıs gündemegzersizlerini uygulayabilir.

Can I offer you something?

In Summer time we hang ‘Mahya’ in between the towers of Bethanien. At the begining for what to say we had this phrase in our minds: ‘Can I offer you something?’
Finally we decided to with lights ‘ Sadede Gel’-'Get to the point’. Nowadays new mahya are lightened and turned off. With the nationalistic and highly political connotations they fired a serious of discussions in national media. (You can see few newspaper clippings above with bold title as: ‘Happy is the man who says I am Turk’, ‘And the mahya is turned off”, Mahya is left without defense’. Those Mahyas which became the issuse of political agenda are listed as ‘ We are grateful to our army’, ‘National unity is fundamental’. One of the authorities made a mark as: ‘I can not stand any discussion that will built on mosques. All assessments are personal comments.). Somebody wants to light those Mahyas as they are. So we wanted to ask. Why did you write them on the air in the sky? If only you would write ‘Can I offer you something?’

2009 “Komm zur Sache!” (Sadede gel) / ‘Istanbul-Off-Space’ / Kunstraum Kreuzberg, Berlin

‘Istanbul-Off-Space’ kapsamında (iki kule arasına) MAHYA asıyoruz…

Withinside ‘Istanbul-Off-Space’ (in between two towers) we are mounting a ‘MAHYA’ (originally these are messages spelled out by lights strung between minarets).

Yer / Place: Bethanien- Berlin

Tarih/Date: 4 temmuz- 16 Ağustos 2009 / July 4 through August 16 2009

Açılış/ Opening: 3 temmuz 2009, cuma, 19:00 / Friday, July 3, from 7 p.m.

SADEDE GEL (“Komm zur Sache!” )

Why we choose to install Mahya? We choose Mahya (message spelled out by lights strung between minarets) not just because its traditional background in Turkey. They are usually installed in Ramadan, in religious month, to be seen when night falls after the sunset when people break their fast. In the past when there was no cinema or television Mahyas are made to entertain people with light images and also to give some messages such as television broadcasting supposingly does today. Mahya is a strong device to spread messages. So at this point the main question was What would be our message as atılkunst? Mainly mahyas till today had had religious or political expressions. Those expressions emphasize morally accepted values and dominant social and political statements. As Atılkunst, we choose our expression as ‘Sadede Gel’. We use this expression very frequently in our daily conversations. There is no direct translation but we can translate it as ‘Get to the point’. We wanted it to be an answer from the streets saying to get to the point to all ideological and institutional powers. Writing those words in between the towers of Bethanien we installed a common saying coming from locality to the sky, to the limits only dominant power can reach.
As part of the project inside bethanien we installed another expression in German. We want to construct a dialogue in between outside and inside so that we choose to say ‘Nun’ which means ‘Now’. From the sky it is said: ‘Sadede Gel’, from above it is replied: ‘Nun’
_Get to the point
_Now
We think that with this dialogue the sky and the land get to one point.

2009 Book: Bent 005

Bent005
KILAVUZ by Atılkunst
Book Launch on Monday
March 30th 2009,
18.00-21.00
BAS
Meşrutiyet Caddesi No: 92A, Beyoğlu İstanbul
KILAVUZ is a guide to the standardized tests SBS, OKS and OYS. These are tests taken by all Turkish students at different stages of their school careers. Their scores determine if, where and on which level they will proceed in their studies.

KILAVUZ/GUIDE/NAVIGATOR/USER’S MANUAL

To make the long story short, since the day we were born we have been entering in various exams. Some of the very important exams from our youth are: OÖKÖSYS-Student Selection and Placement Examination for Secondary Education Institutions, ALGS-Anatolian High Schools Entrance Exam, ÖLGS-Private High Schools Entrance Exam, ÖSS-Student Selection Examination-ÖYS-Student Placement Examination. Today some of these exams gave their place to new ones or some of them united in one big exam. SBS-Level Determination Exam, OKS-Transition To Secondary Education, llike OGES, STS, OKS, DPY, ÖO, PK, ALS, are new generation examinations. ÖSYM-Student Selection and Placement Examination is united version of ÖSS+ÖYS.
In order to make “Kılavuz”, we took questions from those standardized scholastic tests (some of them are mentioned above) as published as newspaper supplements in 2008. In order to make a guide questioning the essence of being THIS Country’s citizen, we choose various types of questions; about national status, about oxygen (the first question in the book is beginning with: Hi, My name is oxygen), about our ancestors, politicians, political agenda, national heroes, about one popular event from newspapers.
So, again to make long story short, we put preferred questions one after onother. Kılavuz is the sampling of the questions from standart exams, that a Turkish citizen has to surpass in order to determine his or her level, in order to be determined, to be established, to be placed, to be selected and to be recognized.
The essential part of “Kılavuz” is index section. We made our index listing A to Z favored words taken from the selected questions. The index questions all the questions that have been asked to us. From A to Z it is a single row of dominant ideology which stands in attention.

According to the index the rate of some words: Asker/Soldier passes 7 times, Atatürk/Founder and First president of Turkish Republic passes10 times, Baba/Father passes 6 times, Devlet/Government passes 22 times. Demokrasi/Democracy passes 5 times.

Tarih: 08-31 Mart 2009

Açılış: 7 mart saat:18:00

Mekan: Hafriyat Karaköy

Adres: Necatibey Caddesi No:79, Karaköy

This exhibition is not an exhibition of art history on feminism. It is an act on behalf of feminism and also a contemporary art exhibition.

WOMEN PLATFORMS, ORGANIZATIONS, ARTISTS TOGETHER…
“GENDER IS NOT A PLAGUE, DEFINITELY NOT AN OBJECT OF PROVOCATION”
Date: March 08-31, 2009
Opening: March 7, 6:00 pm
Location: Hafriyat Karakoy
Adress: Necatibey Caddesi No:79, Karakoy

“Unfair Provacation”
exhibiton will begin at Hafriyat Karakoy, on March 7…

The act-exhibition curated by Canan Senol, will be opened on March 8th, Women’s Day, gathering together feminist activists and theorists within and outside of contemporary art and professional artists working with feminist expressions.
The concept of gender, which is attempted to be tyrannized over by the government, will be analyzed from a feminist perspective by the exhibition participants including artists from diverse diciplines such as theatre, stand-up, painting, photography, sculpture and many more.
The feminist exhibition, which will be opened on March 7, is titled after the Turkish punishment law stated under the number 5237 and the title “causes that remove or reduce the fine responsibilities” that defines “unfair provocation reduction”. This clause has existed and still exists as a clause that feeds the murders of morals, of honour, of chastity and that tempts people to use violance against women. Although the exhibition is titled after this clause that exists in the punishment law, its content is being focused on women in practical life who are taken up as an element of “provocation”. Also this exihibiton is positioning the viewers as participants and is evoking them to think about all the political, cultural and social discriminations against women and start producing methods for counteraction.
The catalogue of the exhibition, which is edited by the art critic and journalist Aysegul Sonmez, is aiming to be an alternative platform within and aside to the exihibiton which will include various aspects from feminist art theories to women characters in Turkish Literature, women artists outside the exihibition and their works and quotations.
The exhibition participants: Atil Kunst, Aylin Kuryel, Cagla Comert, Canan Senol, Dilek Winchester, Didem Yazici, Evrim Kavcar, Filmmor , Fulya Cetin, Gulcin Aksoy, Gulizar Onen, Gunes Terkol, Hale Tenger,Hatice Telci, Hilal Esmer, İnci Furni, Nalan Yırtmac, Neriman Polat, Nil Yalter, Nilbar Gures, Oda Project , Ozlem Gok, Sezgi Abalı, Sukran Moral, Yasemin Ozcan Kaya, Amargi art studio.

Jump if you are a real man

We started to make this piece with a daring statement ‘Jump if you are a real Man’. This provocative outburst was taken from news announced in a tabloid. It was one page story about a woman who provokes her husband to jump from balcony. The tragicomic almost unreal story was enhanced with images of this couple; while the woman screaming and the man jumping from the balcony.

Our installation took place on display windows of the gallery. We put together identical round shaped transparent stickers made of the combination of one image from the story and her provocation. Those stickers are put side by side in order to make a pattern. From the street the display window looked as if it had a lace curtain. So it was very attractive for passerby people. But when they approach to see it was not welcoming and easy to deal with.

It had the same cold and straightforward stance as the woman who provokes her husband without slightest hesitation.

Kurye Manifestosu

10. İstanbul Bienali kapsamında, Hafriyat mekanında gerçekleştirilen ‘Dünyayı yesen doymazsın’ adlı sergi kapsamında Tuvalet müdahalesine devam edilmiştir. Tüketimin son noktası olan kara deliğe işaret edilmiştir.

The toilet installation took place in Hafriyat Karaköy, in 10th Istanbul Biennial, in an exhibition called “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach”. With this installation, The last stop of consumption has been pointed out.

2007 ‘Müdahale’, ‘İntervention’, Hafriyat Karaköy WC-I, Istanbul

In our political and physical geography, street interventions can only be realized in secluded places and with illicit touches. In Turkey using the public area has a different meaning than what it is in Europe. Since Turkey has been through three Coup d’Etat in only the second half of the 20th century, writing on walls has always been considered as a political guerilla manifesto that had to be immediately punished by the police. Thus these actions has to be done silently. An individual usually declares his or her identity by marking on toilet walls, school desks, ATMs, telephone booths etc… In a way, this action says ‘I am here’ and ‘I have something to say’. Particularly in our geography it depicts bashful attitude. Toilets, in particular are center stage for these acts. Those places used as communication ports between people. They are only temporarily occupied by someone. Atıl kunst contributes on this socially accepted alternative communication areas with its own words. It aims at drawing attention to repressed ideas and feelings. By adding new comments on toilet walls, Atıl Kunst opens new discussions.Atıl kunst made series of installations inside toilets. The first one is 2007 inside Hafriyat, ‘İntervention’ exhibition. Typical toilet phrases are written with permanent pens. As today toilet rooms are covered with ceramic tiles it is no longer possible to write with regular pen and pencil. New plastic doors can’t be scratched anymore. Yet, new construction materials give way to alternative touches. In this specific installation, despite of the harsh content of the words, the toilet itself looks quite elegant and stylish.

Accessing Information
Mithat Bereket & Atilkunst

The meeting concentrates on mobile journalism, alternative information channels, activist criticism on media, censorship and auto-censorship in Turkish media.

Mithat Bereket discusses mobile journalism by giving a special emphasis to the Middle East and the alternative information channels. The talk also covers activism and censorship in Turkey. In this context, Atilkunst talks about the series ‘gündem fazlasi’ (excess agenda) by presenting some samples from the series. ‘Gündem fazlasi’ (excess agenda) is a reading of the agenda with critical interventions. This act is a reminder of an agenda which could be also personal.

Atilkunst
It is an activist group. Atilkunst started the group activities in 2006. Atilkunst acts and thinks through irony. Instead of considering and processing a single concept in details, it creates an up-to-date reaction area. Atilkunst starts its action with words, then transforms these words to images. Those images are shown in public or private places in various formats, such as stickers, videos, photo-novels. Actions of the group could not be considered as street art in its strict sense, but streets are also a their area of action. By using the communication methods of mass media, Atilkunst makes strong remarks on political agendas and dominant daily expressions.

In addition to its artistic context, Atilkunst can be considered as an activist and culture jammer group. Under the attack of today’s image bombardment, Atilkunst works with the similar tools of mass media in purpose of constructing an alternative lateral culture.
